Gov. Bill Ritter signed 18 bills into law and vetoed his second bill of the session on Monday. The measure he vetoed would have required larger public schools to hire a licensed physical education instructor.
Ritter said House Bill 1122 [sponsored by Rep. Debbie Benefield, Arvada] would have created disparities between smaller and larger schools. He said the bill would require a school such as Archuleta High School with 54 students to hire a licensed instructor or cancel those courses because the district enrolls more than 1,500 students, the threshold set by the bill. Ritter said districts could voluntarily enact the proposal.
Bills he signed addressed wildfire prevention, flag display and higher education measures, among other topics.
